Upon enrollment, students will be asked to schedule their in-person class. It is recommended that students look over the Kansas Driving Handbook prior to the day of the in-person course.
You will begin your course with an 8-hour group instruction at the ICT North Star Driving Academy led by our state-licensed instructors. Classroom instruction will include 8 hours of coursework (with an additional one-hour break for lunch) and additional time for taking the final exam. The 30-question final is a comprehensive exam that is divided into 3 sections: True/False, Matching, & Multiple Choice.
Students who successfully complete the 8-hour class by earning an 80% or higher will be eligible to move on to the behind-the-wheel portion of the course.
Students who pass the written exam will receive a paper learner’s permit to use during the course. It is highly recommended that students take their paper permit (DE-99) directly to the DMV to exchange for their Learner’s Permit or as soon as possible.
Behind-the-wheel training includes 6-7 hours of one-on-one instruction in one of ICT North Star’s vehicles. Students who are ready to advance to driving instruction will be provided with a scheduling link to make appointments to drive with an instructor. Driving lessons will cover a range of driving techniques and scenarios that are paced to suit the student’s level of proficiency. In order to pass the driving exam, the student must be able to perform driving tasks without correction or assistance from the instructor.
Students who have not demonstrated proficiency in the necessary behind-the-wheel skills at the time of their driving exam will need to re-enroll & retake the course. If the driver’s ability to pass the driving exam is in question, we may suggest that the driving test is postponed so that the student may practice with their parent prior to driving exam.
Students must complete the course (in-person classroom & behind-the-wheel training) within 6 months of beginning the course. The State of Kansas reserves the right to re-test individuals even if they successfully complete a driver’s education course.
Students that pass the course will be given a certificate of completion that they may take with them to the DMV to exchange for the appropriate designation of driver’s license if they meet the other state requirements found here.
Behind-the-wheel Driving Instruction
After you complete your classroom training, you will be ready to begin behind-the-wheel training. You will be provided with a link to schedule your driving lessons at times that work best for you. 6 hours of driving with an instructor are required. For added convenience, our instructors can pick students up at home or from school for their driving lessons. Parents are welcome to accompany students during their driving training.
*Students must pass a comprehensive driving exam to successfully complete the course. Passing students will receive a Certificate of Completion that can be taken to DMV to show as proof of completion of an approved Driver Education Program.
*Students who are not able to pass the driving exam will need to re-enroll & retake the course in its entirety (including classroom instruction).
why Take a Drivers Education course?
Emergencies cannot be predicted, but they can be prepared for.
Teen drivers (ages 15-20) are involved in approximately 20% of the total number of crashes in Kansas per year.
Our curriculum focuses on the IPDE driving method:
Identify - Scanning using a visual search pattern
Predict - Anticipate possible hazards & conflicts
Decide - Determine the safest action to take
Execute - Perform the maneuver necessary to avoid conflict
We will cover other topics including vehicle maintenance, road signs & markings, driving in adverse conditions, Kansas Driving Laws & Regulations, Safety, and much more.
